SİNAN DEMİRTAŞ'S “THE JOURNEY” EXHIBITION AT MERKUR
Sinan Demirtas’s new exhibition, "Journey”, is taking place in Merkur gallery in November 25 to December 14, where abstraction in his works seen as a concept related to time.
At first glance, figures he used could be regarded as hyperrealist, but in fact, they contradict with the concept and actually they are products of abstraction. One of the main points of the paintings Demirtas is the relationship established with space. In the "Journey" series, space is a limiting element for the body, and in this respect canvas is not a medium for the painting as we are accustomed to, but it is an element that complements the painting and becomes integrated with it. Figures leaning towards to the canvas (sometimes to lower edge of the canvas, sometimes side of the canvas), causes them to effuse from the space of the canvas, and look for new spaces. Integrating with canvas and overflowing from it, figures are searching for a different space for them and it makes them seem like they are taking a journey to their inner worlds.
Sense of infinity reached with abstraction, and time, creates space and time perception that we are not accustomed to, manifest itself in all the paintings of Sinan Demirtas. In the exhibition “Journey”, we again see figures; the method that he used didn’t change. Began with ‘Foot’ in 2005, these paintings are clear indicator of the same method used.
