HALIM AL KARIM'S “HIDDEN” EXHIBITION AT MERKUR
Iraqi-born artist Halim Al Karim's first solo exhibition in Turkey, in collaboration with XVA Gallery Dubai and Gallery Merkur, will be on view from October 8 to November 5, 2012. Titled "Hidden", the exhibition includes works from the artist's "Hidden Love" and "Hidden Goddess" series, as well as works produced in many different concepts.
Halim Al Karim is known for his provocative photographic style from the Middle East and Asia to the Americas. In his "Hidden Love" and "Hidden Goddess" series, Al Karim focuses on politics, human nature and the idea of being "Hidden", depicting a love that is hidden - a love that is experienced by everyone but not put into words, forbidden, unrequited or in the early stages of infatuation.
Inspired by Karim's time in Iraq, "Hidden Love" features a portrait of women whose mouths have been taped shut to keep them silent, with the entire photograph translucent except for their bright eyes. The "Hidden Goddess" series features portraits of women whose faces are covered with the same technique. Each photograph is framed with a thin layer of black silk fabric, based on the idea of the veiled woman. The silk layer further distances the figure, prompting the viewer to ask: "Who is this woman? Why is she hiding from us?" inviting the viewer to guess.
Galeri Merkur invites you to the opening of the exhibition on October 8, 2012, where you can experience these exciting works and meet the artist.
